Math for medievalists
Expected income from two teaching assistantships for 2007-08: $6,000.

My tuition: $6,913 and change.

Cost of an alumni library card at U of T: $125.

I'm not taking any courses this year, just beavering away on my dissertation. I'm also in the sixth year of my degree, which means no more funding from the university. So basically I'm paying the University of Toronto some $900 in order to obtain a library card that I could be getting for $125 and for the privilege of doing a lot of unpaid work for them. How foolish am I?

It occurs to me that I could save a lot of money and working hours by dropping out of school, then reapplying to the program when my dissertation is written. It's a pity that I've already dropped out, and back into, this degree once before. I don't think I can get away with it a second time, or I would seriously do it.

Hey, remember I had the privilege of paying the university tuition while effectively sitting back and watching S. Akbari and J. Munro having a pissing fight over my defense date. Money I could certainly have put to better use elsewhere (like, um, living expenses???). I feel your pain, and unfortunately am tending to agree with your assessment about taking another leave of absence. Though you may want to chat with [info]petmyrhino, who might have a different take on the issue.

You're applying (or have applied) for a dissertation completion grant, yes? Yes? It's an easy form to fill out and more-or-less automatic once you have.

Right! Thanks for the reminder. I have to track down one of those forms.

Ouch! I feel your pain. I abandoned the ivory tower after my MA to avoid... well, to avoid writing a dissertation, actually. :D But also to avoid bleeding out cash. (Not that I *make* any money now, teaching; I just get to pretend.)
