You thought there wouldn't be an election post?
The last time I was this inactive during a general election was 1984. It feels very strange to walk past Party HQ on St. Mary Street and see lights burning into the night but have no idea what's going on in there.
Was it wise to sit this one out? I don't know. The price of political apathy is to be ruled by people who care more than you do. But I don't feel a sense of obligation to anyone who's running in Toronto this year. My MP in this riding is decent enough to vote for, but the one time I met her in person she was just a bit drunk and belligerent. She had cause, mind you. Paul Martin had just won the leadership convention and we were standing in the Sheila Copps hospitality suite. Still, not the stuff that great loyalty is made of.
From what I hear, I am hardly the only Grit who stayed home this season. That scrape you hear is the sound of knives being sharpened. The next Party convention should be very, very interesting.
